Many people think that being a ghostwriter is easy.

You just sit down at the computer and type away in someone else’s voice, right?

Wrong.

While it’s true that you don’t have to worry about things like marketing and promotion, there is a lot more to being a successful ghostwriter than meets the eye. To be successful, you need to understand and meet your client’s needs. After all, they entrust you with their words, stories, and voices.

It’s a big responsibility, to say the least.

Here are the five most essential needs of all ghostwriting clients, or as I call them, soon-to-be authors.

Confidentiality

When you’re hired to ghostwrite someone’s story, they entrust you with their most personal thoughts and experiences.

You must respect their privacy and keep everything confidential. If you can’t do that, then ghostwriting isn’t the proper gig for you. The ghostwriting relationship is built on trust, and if you violate that trust, you will damage the relationship and your reputation as a ghostwriter.
