The end of CrossFit as we know it

Greg Glassman led the certification seminar when I became an L1 certified coach and later a box owner. Yeah. He was the “Flowmaster” back in the day. That was in 2007. It was in Pittsburgh, PA, and man, was it a cold as hell day.

I remember we did our PVC drills in the snow, in the parking lot of the “box” who was our host that weekend.

I honestly had little to no clue what the heck CrossFit even was, but having done it back in the D.C. area in 2006–07, I knew I had to be a part of it.

Not too long after my L1, Coach no longer leads the seminars. They got too busy. Growth is what I heard.

And it was the end of CrossFit as we know it (but the beginning of something new)…

It seems like just yesterday, my wife and I was sitting with “Coach” at a Mexican food joint in San Antonio, Texas. We probably had too many margaritas, for sure, we had way too many bowls of chips and salsa. This was in 2009 or so.

Our chat was about adaptive athletics, or specifically how we were helping wounded vets and amputees re-engage into fitness. We both knew it was more than just fitness, though. It was about life and getting back into a new normal with missing limbs and, of course, dealing with PTS.
