The Place Where Every Day Is The Only One Left
“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”
— Someone Wise
There’s this one place in the world where human spectacles are considered the norm, and the “norm” is considered the spectacle. Venice Beach in Southern Cal.
I remember the first time I went to Venice Beach in California.
The date and year escape me; however, what I saw and learned will forever stick with me.
There I was, marveling at the sights and sounds of one of the wackiest places on earth. Of course, there’s Muscle Beach. Made famous by the likes of Arnold “The Governator” Schwarzenegger. Then there’s the snake charmer. He’s the fella who looks like a 175-year-old witch doctor from Mumbai. Oh, and he carries a 7-foot python around his neck. You know, just strolling down the boardwalk…walking my python kinda shit. Of course, there’s also gobs of homeless folks. (But are they really?) Back to that later.
Like in the show, Baywatch, there’s the prototypical lifeguard stand set right in the middle of the sand. On the beach. I actually remember pausing there and getting my camera out to grab a pic of Pamela Sue Anderson running towards me, red, skintight, lifeguard outfit, and all.
