I used to think I needed the perfect opening line before I could start writing.

So I stared at a blank page, waiting for inspiration to strike. Spoiler alert: it never did. Then I decided to try something counterintuitive — I started messy. Instead of worrying about getting it right, I just got it written. I let my thoughts spill out, knowing I could clean it up later.

For example, when I wrote about moving to a new condo, my first draft was a jumbled list of memories: packing boxes, saying goodbyes, and the nervous excitement of starting over. It wasn’t pretty, but it was real. And that’s what mattered. Once the words were on the page, it was much easier to shape them into something meaningful.

Here’s the truth: Perfection is the enemy of progress. If you’re waiting for the perfect sentence to arrive, you’ll be waiting forever.

Start messy.
